Using TrendMicro HouseCall

When we initiated the program launcher, it checked our Internet connection and its components before downloading the latest ones. Once the update was complete, the program displayed a window, which always appeared on top, showing three steps of the scanning process.

On subsequent launches, the program only downloads components if the ones already downloaded are outdated.

To get started, we clicked the large ‘Scan Now’ button located on the upper right side of the program window. Below the button was a check box that gave us the option to allow the free virus scanner to check our home network. The software could find vulnerable devices connected to the network, but it was recommended that we only use the feature while at home.

When we clicked the button, the scanning process started, with the program displaying what was happening, elapsed time and number of threats found. A progress bar showed the percentage completed. When the scanning process was over, the program window took us to the third step where we reviewed the results. It initially displayed the information in summary, but we could click a link to see more details when we wanted.

In the ‘details’ window, we could click on a threat to view more information about it in the Trend Micro Threat Encyclopedia. The program also gave us the option to mark any file and restore it. We could access the details at any other time by clicking the ‘Logs’ link.

Please note that TrendMicro HouseCall is an online scanner, which means your computer needs to be connected to the Internet for the scanning process to complete successfully. However, you can always use it offline once you have downloaded components, but there is a chance you could be using outdated editions.

The program’s settings enabled us to select the scanning method we wanted. We could select quick scan, which was recommended, full system scan or custom scan that allowed us to specify the sections we wanted to check. We could also choose whether to disable Trend Micro Smart Feedback, which allowed the software to send real-time threat information to the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network for analysis. However, the developers recommend the feature should remain enabled so they can create solutions that provide even better protection.
